Prolotherapty is a Safe, Effective Treatment for Musculoskeletal Pain in Torrance
What is prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is a nonsurgical method for the purpose of strengthening weakened or injured connective tissue. “Prolo-” refers to “proliferate,” because the treatment causes proliferation or growth of new ligament tissue, namely collagen.
How does prolotherapy work?
The Prolotherapy technique involves the injection of a mild irritant solution to cause a controlled inflammatory response that brings blood and nutrients to the area of damaged tissue. This enables your body’s own natural healing response to occur.
This process strengthens and repairs the damaged ligaments and tendons and in turn brings stability to the joints. After several treatments, pain may be significantly reduced because proper function of the joints can be restored. Prolotherapy is an excellent alternative to cortisone injections, which long-term studies have shown can actually weaken tissue.
What kind of solution do you inject?
We use dextrose (pharmaceutical grade sugar water) mixed with a local anesthetic (lidocaine).
How does the inflammation caused by the injection help my joints?
Both ligaments and tendons have very poor circulation and it’s this lack of blood supply that deprives them of the nutrients they need to heal properly. These weakened areas may have little or no blood flow, but they have lots of nerves, which is why you may feel a significant amount of pain. The inflammatory response caused by the injection brings the vital blood flow and nutrients needed to rebuild and restore the connective tissue.
Does the injection hurt?
A local anesthetic is used so there is minimal discomfort with the injections. We can also recommend certain pain relief medications for post-treatment soreness.
Who receives prolotherapy treatment?
Many elite athletes including Olympians and professional athletes use prolotherapy to help heal injuries and manage pain to keep them at the top of their game. Prolotherapy is also used by people of all ages and fitness levels who want to maintain an active lifestyle without the hindrance and discomfort of joint pain.
How many treatments will I need?
Most patients require about three to six prolotherapy treatments to restore function and relieve pain, but many find improvement after only one session. The treatments are usually given at one to two week intervals. Most people feel almost immediate pain relief with the injections.
Does insurance cover prolotherapy?
Generally, prolotherapy is not covered by medical insurance. However, this is on an individual basis and some insurance companies may provide coverage.
